In 2014 the Vostok-Service Group of Companies launched the "Animal Care" project. The project's purpose is to provide free assistance to members of the animal kingdom classified as rare and on the verge of extinction.
Within the framework of the project the company annually allocates funds to support zoo animals, outfit participants of scientific expeditions, and equip staff of research institutes engaged in the study of the ecology and evolution of Russia's fauna.
In 2014 the first ward of Vostok-Service became the sterkh (white crane). Sterkhs are endemics of Russia's northern territories, are threatened with extinction, and are included in the international lists of the Red Data Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), and the Red Data Book of Russia.
In 2015 our colleagues from Italy — the footwear company Panda — joined the project. Another pair of wards that Vostok-Service and Panda sponsor together at the Moscow Zoo are the red (lesser) pandas. Our wards are a female named Zeyn and a male named Chhen Zuan Se. This species is also included in the IUCN Red List with the status "Vulnerable", classified as threatened, because, according to scientists, only about 2,500 individuals remain within the red panda's range.
On March 11, 2017, Chelyabinsk-Vostok-Service joined the Vostok-Service Group's "Animal Care" project. They took under their care a savannah zebra nicknamed ZEFIRKA. The savannah zebra is an exotic animal for our latitudes that inhabits the African savanna. ZEFIRKA is the second zebra to appear in the Urals.
Conservation of the Amur tiger is a national project to save the striped predators that have found themselves on the brink of extinction. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the participants of this project — the permanent RAS expedition studying animals listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and other species of special importance to Russia's fauna, based at the A. N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In the winter of 2015, MONBLANC HUNTER suits were used to outfit scientists working in the Amur tiger's habitat in Primorsky Krai.
One of the expedition's focuses is studying the biology of the Amur tiger in order to develop scientific foundations for its conservation in the Russian Far East and to increase the population size. Staff of the Severtsov Institute conduct continuous monitoring of Amur tiger groups in the southern part of the range, which is most affected by human activity. They track the population size and density of tiger groups, feeding habits, changes in the animals' physiological condition, and the spread of various pathogens dangerous to tigers in this region.
Another area of activity is the rehabilitation of tiger cubs left without a mother. Orphaned cubs are taken to the Center for Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and other rare animals. The Center's staff provide the injured animals with the necessary care and release them into extensive natural enclosures where the cubs live in natural conditions, develop, and hunt under the supervision of the Center's specialists with minimal interference in their lives. Once the cubs grow, gain strength, and learn to hunt effectively on their own, they are released into the wild.
We hope that this contribution from the Vostok-Service Group will help preserve and increase populations of rare animals within our country.
Since 2016 Vostok-Service, together with JSP, one of the largest partners in helmet production, has taken under its care spherical armadillos — a female named Sonechka and her offspring. The youngster grew up and was transferred to another zoo for breeding under an exchange program. The armadillos were chosen as wards for a reason: these animals possess remarkable defensive abilities. The three-banded armadillo is the only armadillo that can roll into a tight armored ball when threatened, resembling a helmet, which is how it got its name.
