Hydrophilic Membrane

A hydrophilic membrane is a thin film or polyurethane coating on a fabric that provides moisture and wind resistance and facilitates the removal of water vapor from the garment's interior.

This membrane works through chains of hydrophilic ("moisture‑loving") polymers that attract water vapor molecules and create a stepped "route" to carry them outside. The process is driven by the difference in humidity levels between the inside and the outside of the garment.

The most common waterproof rating of the membranes used in Vostok-Service products is 5 000 mm water column, which enables them to withstand prolonged drizzle, moderate rain showers, and falling snow.

Fabric breathability — from 5 000 g/m2/24 h — corresponds to moderate intensity physical activity: brisk walking, light jogging, or cross-country skiing.

Properties

  • Windproof and highly water‑resistant.
  • Breathability: the membrane fabric wicks excess moisture away from the space beneath the garment.
  • Durability: stretching and bending of the fabric do not damage the hydrophilic membrane.
  • Easy care: pores do not clog, and no special gentle detergents are required for washing.
  • Odor barrier: second-layer garments worn under a membrane jacket will not absorb unpleasant odors from the environment.
