Every year on the third Sunday of October, Russia observes Food Industry Workers' Day. It is one of the country's key sectors, encompassing thousands of enterprises producing bread, dairy and meat products, confectionery, beverages and much more. The industry employs more than 1,5 млн people.

Interesting facts:

  • Russia is one of the world's largest producers of sugar from sugar beets. Volume – approximately 41,2 млн тонн per year.
  • The first cannery in Russia was opened in 1870 and produced 5 types of canned goods: fried beef, stew, porridge, meat with peas and pea soup.
  • Russian food industry workers have set several world records, including the largest Olivier salad weighing 1841 кг (Orenburg) and a kashkha (okroshka) weighing 855 кг (Penza). These achievements are recorded in the Guinness World Records.
  • In 1864, French scientist Louis Pasteur discovered a method of heat treating food to eliminate harmful microorganisms, which became known as pasteurization.
