On October 12, agricultural workers celebrate their professional holiday.
Traditionally, on the second Sunday of October Russia observes Agricultural Worker's Day ― honoring everyone who works the land and provides the country with food. Agriculture plays a key role in Russia's economy: it not only ensures food security, but also creates jobs, promotes the development of rural areas, and supplies raw materials to industry.
Interesting facts:
- For several years, Russia has been the world's largest exporter of wheat, supplying it to more than 130 countries.
- Krasnodar Krai is the main rice-growing region. About 80% of all Russian rice is grown on Kuban flooded fields (specially equipped fields with a system of canals). Russian rice is considered one of the most environmentally clean in global rice production.
- Reindeer herding is a distinct branch. For the indigenous peoples of the North (the Nenets, the Khanty, the Chukchi), reindeer herding is not just an agricultural sector but the foundation of their entire way of life, culture, and traditions. The reindeer population in Russia is one of the largest in the world.
- In September 2025, scientists at the Sirius Science and Technology University demonstrated strawberries and grapes developed through genome editing. The grape is resistant to fungal infections and does not require treatment with fungicides, while the strawberry contains 12 times more quercetin (a natural antioxidant).
