- The USSR was a pioneer in the peaceful use of atomic energy. The Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant, commissioned on June 26, 1954, became the world's first nuclear power plant connected to a public power grid.
- Russia is the only country in the world to possess a fleet of nuclear icebreakers. Currently, the Russian fleet includes 8 nuclear icebreakers. These powerful vessels can escort ships through ice up to 3 meters thick and provide year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route.
- The Russian nuclear industry produces a significant share of the world's radioisotopes for medical diagnostics, which aid in the fight against cancer and other diseases.
