Every year, on the first Sunday of September, Russia celebrates the Day of Oil and Gas Industry Workers. The work of oil and gas professionals supplies the country with energy resources. Thanks to their work at fields, drilling rigs and refineries, our cars are refueled, homes are heated, and industry receives the necessary raw materials.
Interesting facts:
- Russia consistently ranks among the world's top three oil producers, producing millions of barrels of "black gold" daily.
- Thousands of different products are made from oil: from plastics and cosmetics to asphalt and medicines. Even chewing gum and sports shoes can be made from petroleum products.
- The absolute world record for drilling depth belongs to Russia — the Z-44 "Chaivo" oil well on the Sakhalin shelf, drilled by Rosneft in 2017. Its depth is 15 000 meters, comparable to the height of 20 Burj Khalifa skyscrapers stacked on top of each other.
- Some of the earliest evidence of humans using petroleum products dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. Natural bitumen — a hard or viscous resinous substance — was found there and the Sumerians, Akkadians and Babylonians used it for waterproofing ships, bonding construction materials and other purposes.
