Under the care of the Vostok-Service Group are the red pandas Zeyn and Ryzhik and the Daurian crane at the Moscow Zoo, as well as the Caucasus-Białowieża bison Merkiz in the Oksky Reserve. Our branches in various regions of Russia also sponsor the Daurian crane. Here we describe the habits of the animals under our care.

Animals leave no one indifferent. Some are impressed by the strength and grace of predators, others by striking coloration or the endearing habits of our smaller brethren. Photos and videos of animals are among the most popular content, and it’s no wonder: watching them is a pure pleasure!

All the animals under our care are very different and have their own lifestyles. Here we describe their habits, including those in summer.

In summer bison stay closer to riverbeds, and on particularly hot days they move into the forests. To escape the heat, the animals shelter in shady thickets. The diet of wild bison directly depends on climatic and weather conditions: in summer they feed mainly on berries, grasses and young leaves. When insects bother them, they seek refuge from these pests in dry, wind-swept places. A few hours before sunset the bison always head to water to drink.

Small, or red, pandas are most active at night. During the day they usually sleep curled up and covered with their bushy tail, among branches or in tree hollows. When it’s hot, they stretch out on thick branches, letting all four paws dangle down. Sometimes they sleep sitting up, like raccoons. After sleeping they climb down headfirst, balancing with their tail like cats. Red pandas are excellent climbers but move much less efficiently (quite slowly) on the ground. If threatened, they immediately climb trees.

Daurian cranes are diurnal. At night these birds sleep standing on one leg, often in the middle of a body of water, thereby protecting themselves from predators. They live in pairs and only gather in small groups at breeding sites. These birds are monogamous: once they choose a mate they remain faithful for life. Courtship is accompanied by jumps, wing clapping and bowing.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of any products in the Vostok-Service range is allocated to the care of our animals.
