On this day in Russia, light industry workers celebrate their professional holiday.
Every year on the second Sunday of June in Russia, workers in the light industry celebrate their professional holiday.
This is a holiday for everyone involved in the production of textiles, footwear and other consumer goods. Work in this sector requires high precision, attention to detail and the ability to work with a variety of materials. Light industry is one of the most important sectors, providing for the everyday needs of millions of people.
Interesting facts:
- Tarpaulin is a heavy-duty fabric, usually made from cotton or linen, sometimes with added synthetic fibers. Originally it was used for ship sails — it was strong and water-repellent. Light industry adapted this material: by treating it with special compounds (flame-retardant, water-repellent), it produced reliable protective clothing for builders, firefighters and representatives of other professions.
- Linen is a natural fiber obtained from the stems of the plant. It began to be used for fabric production as early as 6 тыс. years ago. The extraction process is labor-intensive: stems are soaked, beaten and combed, and then the resulting fibers are spun into yarn. In Ancient Egypt, linen fabrics were so highly valued that they were even used for mummification — priests wore only linen clothing, considering it "pure". Today linen remains popular.
- For more than 3 тыс. years China kept the secret of silk production: attempting to smuggle silkworm cocoons out of the country or to disclose the technology was met with severe measures. Silk is obtained from the threads of the mulberry silkworm, which are unwound from the cocoons.
We warmly congratulate all workers of the light industry on their professional holiday! We wish you robust health, happiness, family well-being, and comfortable and safe working conditions.
