On September 21, forestry workers celebrate their professional holiday.
In Russia, the third Sunday of September is observed as Forestry Workers' Day. It honors those whose calling is the care of the "green lungs" of our planet.
Forests play a key role in the Earth's ecosystem: they clean the air, regulate the climate, and provide a home for millions of species of animals and plants. Preserving forests is directly linked to the well‑being of future generations and to a healthy environment for living and working.
Interesting facts:
- One mature tree produces enough oxygen in a day for three people to breathe.
- Trees continue to grow throughout their lives. Oak and spruce can reach an age of 500 years. Pine lives approximately 350 years, while alder and ash around 300 years.
- The most common species in Russia is the larch (about 35%). It is the only deciduous conifer in the world. In winter it sheds its soft needles, thus conserving water: roots cannot draw moisture from frozen ground, and without needles evaporation stops.
- Larch wood, rich in resin, has a unique density — it sinks in water and is rightly called "wooden metal". When submerged for a long time it does not rot but becomes a material whose strength is comparable to stone.
- Trees are the best protection against soil erosion. Their roots bind the soil, and their canopies intercept rain, reducing runoff and preventing soil washout after storms.
Caring for the environment is one of the priorities of the Vostok-Service Group. This year an environmental tree-planting campaign was carried out, with more than 4 568 seedlings planted in 12 regions of the country. The campaign covered cities from Moscow to Irkutsk.
