World Crane Day is observed on September 14.
Every year, on the second Sunday of September, the world celebrates Crane Day — a day dedicated to one of the most ancient, beautiful and vulnerable birds on the planet. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of conserving these majestic creatures.
The crane is a symbol of homeland, longevity, loyalty and hope. Some species, including the Daurian crane, are currently threatened with extinction. Their preservation is a shared responsibility that requires attention and participation.
Interesting facts about the Daurian crane:
- The main distinguishing feature is the bright red patches of skin around the eyes, which earned it the nickname "spectacled crane".
- Unlike other species, it prefers to settle in marshy river valleys, wet meadows and lake basins.
- It is listed in the international Red Data Book and is threatened with extinction. Its global population is approximately 6,000 birds.
- Like all cranes, they form lifelong pairs. However, there is a particularity in chick rearing: often two pairs build nests close to each other to jointly guard the territory and protect their offspring from predators, demonstrating elements of collective care.
- It nests in only three countries — Russia (mainly in Transbaikalia and the Amur region), Mongolia and China. It winters in a limited number of locations — on the Korean Peninsula and in central and southern China.
