Every year, on the last Sunday of August, Russia celebrates Miners' Day. Miners' labor supplies the country with coal, ore and other mineral resources. Thanks to their work in mines and open-pit mines, our homes are heated, factories operate, and the economy develops.
Interesting facts:
- Kuzbass is one of the largest coal basins in the world; its reserves are estimated at 635 billion tonnes.
- Canaries used to be taken down into mines. These birds detect gas leaks before humans and begin to behave restlessly. Today gas detectors are used.
- The international symbol of miners is the crossed hammer and pick. It is depicted on the coats of arms of many mining towns.
- The Saranovsky mine in Perm Krai traces its history back to 1889 — chromite ore is mined there. The Severnaya mine in Monchegorsk (Murmansk Oblast) was founded in 1936 and still operates, extracting nickel and copper.
- Coal is fossilized ancient plant material. Millions of years ago, giant ferns, horsetails and clubmosses accumulated in swamps after dying. Without access to oxygen they gradually transformed first into peat, then into coal. The longer the process lasted, the higher the concentration of carbon became, and therefore the better the quality of the coal.
