Fisherman's Day in Russia is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of July. This holiday brings together representatives of the fishing and processing industries, fisheries protection officers, fish-breeding farms, research and educational institutions, as well as everyone for whom fishing is a beloved hobby!
Interesting facts:
- Bream have well-developed hearing and sense of smell. They dislike noise and choose areas with slow water flow.
- Crucian carp, carp and sazan prefer baits with garlic.
- Fish bite better when pressure is normal or low. When pressure changes, their swim bladder functions less effectively, and fish may lie on the bottom.
- Far Eastern fishermen in 2024 set a record for the catch of iwashi sardine. They harvested 579,9 thousand tonnes — this is an absolute record for the entire post-Soviet period.
- Large concentrations of fish can be found at river bends where the channel scours out holes. In lakes and ponds fish shelter in vegetation and reeds.
- After spawning, predatory fish begin to eat more. At this time the water can be murky, so bright lures are used to catch predators.
- In 2024 more than 2,1 billion juvenile salmonids, sturgeon, whitefish and other species were released into water bodies to increase the numbers of rare fish that are under protection.
