Traditionally in Russia, May 21 is observed as Polar Explorer's Day. This profession is considered one of the most demanding, as work in the Arctic and Antarctic is a true test of endurance.
Interesting facts:
- The date of the holiday commemorates the opening of the first polar scientific research drifting station "North Pole-1", which operated for 274 days and covered more than 2 000 km.
- In settlements of the Far North, buildings are often painted in bright colors: red, yellow, orange. This makes houses clearly visible against the white-gray landscapes characteristic of these areas, as well as in any weather. In addition, they add bright colors that are otherwise lacking here.
- Polar night is a phenomenon when the sun does not rise above the horizon for more than 24 hours. At the North Pole the polar night lasts approximately 174 days (September 25–26 – March 17–18), at the South Pole — 182 days (March 23 – September 21).
- Polar day is a phenomenon when the sun does not set for more than 24 hours. At the North Pole the polar day lasts 190 days (March 19 – September 25), at the South Pole — 184 days (September 21 – March 23).
Vostok-Service has cooperated for more than 20 years with the expedition center "Arktika", participating in the preparation of expeditions of the Arctic and Antarctic research institutes; in 2023 it began cooperation with the Student Expedition Corps "Team of the Arctic". On May 23, three scientific and environmental expeditions of the Student Expedition Corps "Team of the Arctic" will depart for the Arctic: to the Zimnegorsky Lighthouse (Arkhangelsk Region), Cape Kanin Nos (NAO), and Kolguyev Island (NAO). Expedition participants will clean Arctic territories of debris and prepare it for recycling and disposal, assess the condition of abandoned polar stations and lighthouses, collect information to develop measures for preserving Arctic landscapes, restore historical sites, and perform many other tasks.
