Originally this site was established to protect and restore the population of the Russian desman. Today it focuses on preserving rare species of plants and animals and conducts unique scientific research.
This is how we gained another ward — a bison named Merkiz. He is an adult male (born 2015), heading a breeding group composed of five females and two calves. This mighty handsome fellow won our hearts when we visited the reserve to meet its staff and inhabitants and to learn how we could help.
Ekaterina Leonidovna Tsibizova, senior research associate and head of the bison nursery, told us about the nursery and the reserve where it is located and introduced us to its residents — several bison families. We toured all the enclosures and, listening to Ekaterina Leonidovna, who knows every animal personally and by name, we came to appreciate and respect the enormous work being done here to restore the bison population. After that we chose our own ward.
The Caucasian-Belovezh bison are listed in the Red Data Book, and it is important and meaningful for us to be able to help preserve this species!
