We've already told you many times about the red pandas in our care — Zeyne and Ryzhik. But there are many more interesting facts about them.
We have told you many times about our charges – the red pandas Zeyn and Ryzhik. But there are many more interesting facts about them.
Small (red) pandas are members of the panda family. They are often mistaken for raccoons: they look very similar externally, but differ in coloration.
The red panda is easy to recognize by its reddish-brown fur and white markings on its face. This coloration acts as camouflage: in the wild the animals often hide or rest in the crowns of fir trees, whose branches are covered with reddish-brown moss and white lichen.
A few more interesting facts about our charges:
- The small panda sometimes stands on its hind legs. Many people find this very cute, but the animals do this when they feel threatened. This makes the panda appear taller to deter a threat.
- The tail is not just an ornament for the animal. It plays an important role, helping red pandas maintain their balance in trees. On average, the tail can range from 25 to 47 centimeters in length.
- The red panda's familiar appearance only develops in the third month after birth. The cubs usually have a beige coat.
- Small pandas are among the animals that can eat while lying on their backs.
Red pandas tolerate the cold well: their thick fur protects them from getting chilled. Therefore you can see them even in winter. Come to the Moscow Zoo to meet our charges – Zeyn and Ryzhik.
