On 21 June in Russia, medical professionals celebrate their professional holiday.
In Russia, Medical Workers' Day is observed annually on the third Sunday of June.
This demanding and responsible profession brings together deep knowledge and an understanding of the most subtle processes of the human body. The expertise of professionals ensures the preservation of life and health, the performance of highly complex operations, the development of pharmaceuticals, and the integration of advanced technologies into the healthcare system.
Interesting facts:
- The skin — the largest organ. Its area is 1,5–2 м² (an adult), and its weight together with subcutaneous fat can reach 17% of the total body mass.
- The liver can regenerate: even after removal of up to 70% of its tissue it eventually returns to its original volume. This occurs due to compensatory hypertrophy — the remaining tissue increases in volume through cell division.
- The heart pumps millions of liters of blood over a person’s lifetime. In a day it pumps about 7500 liters, and over an average lifespan — roughly 5,7 млн liters. The size of the heart is approximately equal to the size of a person’s fist.
- The pancreas received its name historically, but its actual position is behind the stomach, deep in the abdominal cavity. This explains why pain from inflammation of the gland (pancreatitis) is often not felt in the stomach area but wraps around the upper abdomen and radiates to the back.
- The head — the only part of the body that does not have a layer of fat. That is why hair protects and warms the head.
- When a person blushes (for example, from embarrassment or nervousness), the gastric mucosa can also acquire a reddish tint. This happens due to the influence of the sympathetic nervous system and the specific functioning of the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the blood supply throughout the body.
- It is impossible to tickle oneself. This is because the brain already knows about the movement of one’s own hands and suppresses the response to the touch. If someone else tickles us, we begin to laugh because the brain perceives that touch as unexpected.
- It is difficult to state the exact number of bones in the human skeleton, since people often have an extra rib or additional small bones (for example, sesamoid bones). On average, the skeleton contains 205–207 bones.
