On August 2, railway industry workers celebrate their professional holiday.
Every year on the first Sunday of August, Russia celebrates Railway Workers' Day. Rail transport is one of the key sectors of the economy, providing freight and passenger transportation over vast distances, connecting the regions of the country and contributing to the development of industry, trade and tourism.
Interesting facts:
- The first railway in Russia was built in the Altai, at the Kolyvano-Voskresensky factories, in 1809. It was designed by engineer Pyotr Frolov. The length of the railway was about 1,87 km, and the trains were pulled by horses. It connected the Zmeinogorsk mine with the Korbolikhinsky silver-smelting plant.
- The longest railway in the world is the Trans-Siberian Railway (the Great Siberian Route). Its length is 9288 km. Construction began on 31 May 1891 and was completed on 18 October 1916, lasting about 25 years.
- The longest railway bridge in Russia is the Crimean Railway Bridge. Its length is 18 118,05 meters. It connects Krasnodar Krai with the Crimean Peninsula and is part of the railway line across the Kerch Strait.
